Smith previously won silver in the 100-meter breaststroke at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She also won gold in the 200-meter breaststroke.

Smith's win is only the start of her medal contention in Paris. She will try to replicate her 200-meter breaststroke win from Tokyo inside Paris La Defense Arena later this week.

She was the fastest swimmer throughout in the 100-meter breaststroke. She beat out King and Ireland's Mona McSharry for the top time in Sunday's qualifying heats.
