Cowboys Rumors: Dak Prescott on Track to Become NFL's Top-Paid Player on New Contract

Zach BacharJul 29, 2024

Despite the lack of a current contract extension, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott could be on track to become the highest-paid player in the NFL.

During a Monday appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN's Adam Schefter revealed that Prescott may wait until he hits free agency in 2025 when "his price is going to be through the roof."

Schefter added that the Cowboys passer would "set the record as the highest-paid player" in the league, with his new contract containing a "number that we haven't seen before."

Several big-name quarterbacks have received extensions during the 2024 offseason, although Prescott hasn't been one of them. Trevor Lawrence received a five-year, $275 million contract from the Jacksonville Jaguars on June 13.

Signal-callers continued to get paid after training camp started, with Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins reaching an agreement on a four-year extension worth $212.4 million on Friday. Jordan Love also signed a four-year, $220 million deal to stay with the Green Bay Packers later that day.

Following the extensions, Lawrence and Love are now tied with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow as the highest-paid players in the NFL based on the average annual value of their respective deals (via Spotrac). As for Tagovailoa, he ranks just behind the three passers for the No. 4 spot on the list.

With Prescott currently set to hit free agency, he could earn the No. 1 spot with his next contract after he negotiates with opposing front offices. The 31-year-old is coming off an exceptional 2023 campaign with Dallas, completing 69.5 percent of his passes for 4,516 yards and 36 touchdowns compared to just nine interceptions.

The Cowboys aren't done negotiating with Prescott just yet, as executive vice president Stephen Jones told reporters on Friday that the team "recently" sent a new offer to the quarterback's representatives (h/t Nick Eatman of the team's official website).

If both sides are unable to agree to a deal, Prescott could become the new highest-paid quarterback once he reaches free agency.
