Gleyber Torres Reacts to Yankees Trading for Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Move from 2B to 3B
New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres isn't over the moon about a possible move to the hot corner to accommodate the newly acquired Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Torres told reporters Sunday he'd prefer to stay at second and didn't like playing third base when he was stationed there in the minors:
For now, though, it appears Torres will be staying at second. Chisholm was slotted into the lineup at third base for Monday's meeting with the Philadelphia Phillies.
According to Baseball Reference, the 27-year-old logged a total of 187 innings at third during his spell in the minors. However, he has yet to play there in an MLB game. From that perspective, Torres' reticence is understandable. He hasn't lined up at third since 2018, and at no point in his pro career has he been a full-timer there.
A position change isn't ideal for a player headed for free agency, either.
Some sacrifices will be required in one form or another with Chisholm's arrival, though, because there isn't a natural spot to place him in the field.
Chisholm's best defensive position is second base, which is where Torres plies his trade. The Miami Marlins also deployed him at shortstop and center field, but New York has Anthony Volpe and Aaron Judge respectively locked in at those two spots as well.
Manager Aaron Boone said he intends to get both Torres and Chisholm some reps at third base during workouts. Chisholm, for his part, sounds more amenable to the idea.
"I went out and there and played center field for the first time last year," he told reporters Sunday. "It was pretty difficult at first, but I feel like I can go and play anywhere and help my team win. Especially a winning team, if they're asking me to go somewhere and help them win, I'm definitely going to do it."
The situation could resolve itself if Chisholm moves over to third and plays good enough defense. Boone could face a difficult situation, on the other hand, if the experiment isn't working and he needs to alter his defensive alignment.
