Leon Marchand lived up to the lofty expectations set for him in the men's 400-meter individual medley.
The 22-year-old Frenchman blew away the field in front of his home crowd inside Paris La Defense Arena.
Marchand, the two-time world champion in the event, produced the third gold medal of the home Olympics for France.

Marchand set the Olympic record and beat his closest competition by five seconds.
Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita was the best of the rest in second place, a battle that lasted until the final stroke.
Carson Foster brought home the bronze medal for the United States. He got to the wall within 19-hundredths of a second to claim third over Great Britian's Max Litchfield.
Marchand earned the first-ever medal for France in the 400-meter individual medley. He improved by eight seconds compared to the time he set in seventh place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which took place in 2021.
