Nicholas NathansonJul 27, 2024

Rain delayed the start and/or completion of many men's singles matches on the opening day of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Both Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic managed to finish their matches.

Djokovic dominated doubles specialist Matthew Ebden, limiting the Aussie to just one total game.

Alcaraz also benefited from a favorable matchup, defeating world No. 275 Hady Habib in straight sets.

Elsewhere, top-seeded American Taylor Fritz defeated Alexander Bublik in straight sets, while Daniil Medvedev advanced.

Still in search of his first Olympic gold medal, Novak Djokovic opened up his 2024 Olympic campaign with a straight-set victory.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion defeated Matthew Ebden, primarily a doubles specialist, in fifty-four minutes, limiting the Aussie to just one game.

Djokovic won 83% of points on serve and 14 of 19 points at the net.

The Serbian could not have asked for a more favorable match to begin his Olympic campaign.

However, Djokovic's path forward is far from easy, with a second-round matchup against 14-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal potentially looming.

Carlos Alcaraz began his maiden Olympic campaign with a straight-set victory over Hady Habib.

The No. 2 seed has now won 16 of his last 17 matches and currently has the shortest odds to win the Olympic gold medal in the men's singles draw.

While he was fortunate to begin his campaign against an opponent with limited experience, his draw will only get tougher.

In the second round, Alcaraz will face either Tallon Griekspoor or Cam Norrie, the latter of whom defeated him in the Rio Open last year.
