Suns, Hawks Rosters, Salary Cap After David Roddy, EJ Liddell NBA Trade Rumors

Zach BacharJul 26, 2024

The Phoenix Suns traded forward David Roddy to the Atlanta Hawks on Friday in exchange for forward EJ Liddell, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Roddy thrived in summer league action for the Suns and will now provide some depth at the forward spot behind Zaccharie Risacher, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft.

Here's a look at the updated depth chart and salary cap situation for each team following the trade.

Suns Depth Chart

  • PG: Devin Booker, Monte Morris, Collin Gillespie
  • SG: Bradley Beal, Damion Lee, Josh Okogie
  • SF: Grayson Allen, Royce O'Neale, Nassir Little
  • PF: Kevin Durant, Ryan Dunn, EJ Liddell, Bol Bol
  • C: Jusuf Nurkić, Mason Plumlee, Oso Ighodaro

ESPN's Bobby Marks noted that Liddell has two more years left on his current contract for $2.1 million as well as a team option worth $2.3 million. Before the move, Phoenix had just over $237 million in total cap allocations (per Spotrac).

Hawks Depth Chart

  • PG: Trae Young, Kobe Bufkin, Keaton Wallace
  • SG: Bogdan Bogdanović, Dyson Daniels, Vit Krejci, Garrison Matthews
  • SF: Zaccharie Risacher, De'Andre Hunter, David Roddy
  • PF: Jalen Johnson, Larry Nance Jr.
  • C: Clint Capela, Onyeka Okongwu, Bruno Fernando, Cody Zeller

Per Marks, Roddy also has two more years left on his current deal worth $2.8 million and $4.8 million, respectively. Prior to the move, Atlanta had roughly $14.1 million in second apron space (via Spotrac)

Roddy has 135 games of NBA experience under his belt, starting his career with the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2022-23 season before he was traded to Phoenix on Feb. 8. The former first-round pick owns career averages of 6.6 points and 3.0 rebounds in 18.0 minutes per game.

He excelled during summer league action in Las Vegas, averaging 14.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while shooting 45.8 percent from the field and 36.7 percent from behind the arc through five contests. This included a 10-point performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder in which he connected on three game-winning free throws.

As for Liddell, his time in Atlanta was short-lived after he was acquired by the team in a June 28 trade that also resulted in former All-Star point guard Dejounte Murray heading to the New Orleans Pelicans.

The 23-year-old was a second-round pick in the 2022 NBA draft, appearing in eight games with the Pelicans last season. Liddell spent most of his time in the G League, recording 17.7 points and 7.8 rebounds each night with the Birmingham Squadron.

Phoenix will also be getting some salary cap relief given Liddell's smaller remaining salary, while Atlanta was able to add some depth behind Risacher.
