Browns' Kevin Stefanski Will Call Plays for 2024 NFL Season; Won't Cede to Ken Dorsey

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski will also be the team's offensive play-caller for the 2024 season.

He told reporters Thursday that he will retain his play-calling duties instead of giving them to offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey.

Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal referred to the play-calling question "the big unknown which had hung over the Browns' coaching staff" before Thursday's announcement. After all, Cleveland hired Dorsey this offseason after he was previously the offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills.

That "unknown" didn't linger for long, though, as Stefanski made the announcement early in camp.

He has been the team's play-caller since he was hired as the head coach ahead of the 2020 campaign, although Dorsey was a fresh face with experience calling plays for Josh Allen and the Bills.

They will still work together even if the head coach maintains the final decision-making authority.

"Any decision I make for our football team, I take a lot of information in, I try to listen to a lot of people and make decisions and, ultimately, what I feel really, really confident in is our offensive staff," Stefanski told reporters. "I feel really strongly about Coach Dorsey and the entire offensive staff, so we'll continue to be an operation that works together. It's never been a one-man show."

It's hard to argue with the decision considering Stefanski just won the second Coach of the Year award of his career while helping lead the Browns to the playoffs despite season-ending injuries to quarterback Deshaun Watson and running back Nick Chubb.

Cleveland still managed to reach the playoffs despite playing Dorian Thompson-Robinson and P.J. Walker under center before taking a chance on veteran Joe Flacco. Flacco, who is now on the Indianapolis Colts, rejuvenated the offense and went 4-1 as a starter.

Watson's return means things will look different for the Browns offense, but the play-caller will not be one of the changes.
