Falcons' Kirk Cousins Medically Cleared for Training Camp amid Achilles Injury Rehab

Amid his ongoing recovery from a torn Achilles suffered midway through last season, veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins is set to be an active participant in training camp with the Atlanta Falcons.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Cousins has been medically cleared to practice. However, Schefter added that the Falcons "will be diligent with him and other players coming off injury" by limiting them to "modified reps."

Cousins was in the midst of a strong campaign with the Minnesota Vikings before he tore his Achilles in Week 8 of the 2023 season. He threw for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns and just five interceptions while completing 69.5 percent of his passes.

The 35-year-old chose to depart Minnesota after six seasons and sign with Atlanta on a four-year, $180 million deal. The Falcons struggled to find consistency under center last season while rotating between Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke, so Cousins is viewed as the missing piece to an offense that includes a talented crop of young players in running back Bijan Robinson, receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts.

Cousins participated in Atlanta's voluntary OTAs and mandatory minicamp in a limited fashion. Head coach Raheem Morris said Thursday that he will still have a few restrictions during training camp, but he will still be taking the majority of the first-team reps. Atlanta's first practice took place on Thursday morning.

"The limitations for [Cousins], you won't notice," Morris said, per ESPN's Marc Raimondi.

The Falcons also used the No. 8 pick in the 2024 draft to select quarterback Michael Penix Jr., which surprised many following the signing of Cousins. However, Morris said Penix will continue to split second-team reps with Heinicke during training camp.
