Jets' Garrett Wilson Talks NFL WR Contracts: 'I've Got to Go Make That Happen'

Doric SamJul 24, 2024

Amid the booming market for wide receivers in the NFL, New York Jets rising star Garrett Wilson appears to be next in line for a major payday.

However, Wilson isn't getting too far ahead of himself, as he told reporters at the start of training camp on Tuesday that he knows he has to prove he's worth a big-money contract extension.

"I see all of it," Wilson said, per Brian Costello of the New York Post. "I don't look at it as far as that can be coming for me. I look at it as I've got to go make that happen."

This offseason alone, Justin Jefferson, A.J. Brown, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jaylen Waddle and Nico Collins all were signed to contracts that are among the richest for wide receivers in NFL history.

Wilson will become eligible for an extension following the 2024 season. The 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year started his career with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons despite a revolving door of Jets quarterbacks in his first two years, so he has already proven his worth. The return of star signal-caller Aaron Rodgers could make him an even bigger star in his third season.

"I've got the opportunity to join an elite group of guys," Wilson said. "That's who gets that type of money is an elite group of guys, guys that are part of teams that win games because of them and are difference-makers every single time they are on the field. I've got to go do it. I'm excited because if you do what you think you can do there's a great conversation going on for it at this time. That's not how I'm motivated, but I'm not going to sit here and act like I don't see it."
