The California native is the No. 1 point guard as well as the No. 1 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class, per 247Sports' Composite rankings. McCoy has also received offers from UCLA, Alabama, Arizona, Kansas, Oregon and Washington.

McCoy is the second player in the 2026 class to receive an offer from Duke, as Scheyer's program previously made an offer to Jordan Smith. The 6'3" shooting guard is the No. 8 player in the class and the No. 1 player from the state of Virginia (via 247Sports).

While it's way too early to jump to any conclusions regarding their respective decisions, Smith and McCoy could potentially team up to form one of the country's most imposing future backcourts.

McCoy talked to Scheyer weeks before receiving the offer on Monday, as he revealed that the head coach called him on the phone near the end of June (h/t Matt Giles of SI.com). Scheyer's approach to the recruiting process could sway McCoy, as the guard previously discussed his desire to play for a coach that he has complete trust in.

"I want to play for a coach that I trust," McCoy said in June, via Jamie Shaw of On3.com. "Someone who wants to best for me. I'll be putting my career on the line. So someone who I trust and wants to develop me to be the best version of me I can be. When I commit to a school, I'll be committing to a place that knows what is best for me long term."

In the meantime, Scheyer will look to help the Blue Devils build off a 2024 appearance in the Elite Eight as he enters his third season as head coach.
