NFL Rumors: Cam Akers to Sign Texans Contract Following Achilles Injury, Vikings Buzz

Tyler ConwayJul 21, 2024

The Houston Texans are reportedly planning to sign running back Cam Akers to a new contract, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Aaron Wilson of KPRC previously reported the veteran worked out for the Texans on Sunday. Akers suffered a torn Achilles during the 2023 season with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings were reportedly expected to bring Akers back, pending health, but he remained unsigned.

Akers has suffered an Achilles tear to both his left and right legs since 2021. He rebounded with a solid season in 2022 coming off his first Achilles tear, rushing for 786 yards and seven touchdowns, but he's yet to show the same explosiveness that made him a second-round pick in 2020.

On paper, the Texans don't have much playing time to offer. Houston acquired Joe Mixon from the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason and has Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale returning as incumbents. Ogunbowale's job as a third-down option feels safe, but Pierce has been inconsistent across his first two NFL seasons.

Akers will now likely compete with Pierce for the backup job in camp, assuming he is healthy.

The Texans previously worked out Deon Jackson and Miyan Williams, so it's clear the coaching staff felt a need to improve the depth chart—at least in terms of having camp bodies.
