Grizzlies' Zach Edey Suffers Ankle Injury in 1st NBA Summer League Game Since July 8

Andrew PetersJul 18, 2024

Memphis Grizzlies rookie center Zach Edey exited Thursday's Summer League matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans after suffering an apparent ankle injury.

Edey, the ninth overall pick, went up to attempt to block a shot and landed awkwardly, rolling his ankle and appearing to be in pain. Moments later he was helped to the locker room and did not return.

It was Edey's first appearance since July 8, when he injured his left ankle. He notched six points, three rebounds and one block in nine minutes before exiting.

Before Thursday's game, Edey had missed five straight Summer League games due to ankle soreness. His last outing against the Utah Jazz on July 8 was an impressive one as he put up 14 points, 15 boards and blocked four shots, also hitting a buzzer-beater to send the game into overtime.

With more injury troubles, it could be best for the Grizzlies to keep Edey off the court for the remainder of Summer League as he begins to prepare for his rookie season.

Edey, a two-time National Player of the Year at the collegiate level, is coming off a season where he put up 25.2 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game for Purdue. He helped lead the Boilermakers to a national title game, though they fell short against UConn in the championship.

He'll join a Grizzlies team that is looking to return to the playoffs after an injury-riddled season kept them out last year. After showing promise in his limited Summer League action, Edey seems to be on his way to a big rookie season.
