Tiger Woods: 'I Didn't Do a Whole Lot of Things Right' in 1st Round of British Open

Zach BacharJul 18, 2024

Tiger Woods was honest about his struggles in the first round of the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Club on Thursday.

"I didn't do a whole lot of things right today," Woods said, per ESPN's Mark Schlabach. "I made that putt on the third hole, and then I think I had, what, three three-putts today? I didn't hit my irons very close, and I didn't give myself a whole lot of looks today."

The 48-year-old carded an eight-over 79 and currently sits in a tie for 139th place on the leaderboard, putting himself in danger of missing the cut.

Woods was initially off to a promising start, recording a birdie on hole No. 3.

However, the 15-time major champion didn't make another birdie putt until the 13th hole after racking up four bogeys and two double bogeys in between. He added two more bogeys before the end of his first round, resulting in his disappointing overall score.

Despite his struggles, Woods was grateful that his health improved compared to the start of the year and looked forward to 2025.

"I'm physically feeling a lot better than I did at the beginning of the year," he said, per Schlabach. "At the end of last year, it was tough, and I haven't played a whole lot. I think that, as the year has gone on, I have gotten better."

"Hopefully, next year will be a little bit better than this year," he added.

Woods wasn't the only notable player to go through a tough first round. Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau are currently sitting at seven over and five over following Thursday's action, respectively.

Still, Woods is in danger of missing the cut in three straight majors. He'll attempt to make it through the weekend when his second round begins on Friday at 4:25 a.m. ET.
