Russell Westbrook-Nikola Jokić Duo Intrigues NBA Fans Amid Nuggets Contract Rumors

Zach BacharJul 18, 2024

Former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook is reportedly expected to team up with Nikola Jokić on the Denver Nuggets after being traded from the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Per Wojnarowski, Westbrook was sent to the Utah Jazz as part of a sign-and-trade agreement for guard Kris Dunn. However, he's reportedly expected to agree to a buyout with Utah and join Denver.

Fans were intrigued by Westbrook's fit alongside Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokić after his projected destination for the 2024-25 season was reported.

While Jamal Murray will maintain his status as the team's No. 2 option next to Jokić, Westbrook should soak up most of the available reserve minutes in the backcourt.

Point guard Reggie Jackson, who appeared in all 82 regular-season games with Denver last season, was traded to the Charlotte Hornets on June 27 in order to help the Nuggets open up salary cap space.

That left undrafted rookie Trey Alexander as the team's top backup option before Westbrook was reportedly acquired. While Alexander has looked promising in the Summer League environment, it would be risky for the Nuggets to immediately rely on him to contribute for a squad with championship aspirations.

Although Westbrook's MVP days are behind him, he can still handle a large offensive role for stretches at a time and performed admirably as a reserve for the Clippers last season. In 68 games, he averaged 11.1 points and 4.5 assists in a career-low 22.5 minutes per game on 45.4 percent shooting.

With 2023-24 starting shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope departing to join the Orlando Magic in free agency, Westbrook could also spend some time in Denver's starting unit with Murray occupying the other backcourt spot.

As Jokić and the Nuggets look to respond from a relatively disappointing second-round playoff exit, Westbrook could become a key contributor next season.
