Tiger Woods in Danger of Missing 3rd Straight Cut; Fans Lament British Open Struggles

Joseph ZuckerJul 18, 2024

Tiger Woods is potentially headed toward his third straight missed cut following his first round of the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Club.

Woods is sitting in a tie for 132nd place after carding an eight-over 79.

The 15-time major champion got off to an encouraging start. He parred the first two holes before birdieing No. 3.

That's pretty much were his highlights stopped.

Woods immediately bogeyed No. 4 and then had a double bogey on the fifth hole. Two more bogeys dropped him to four over as he made the turn to the back nine. More damage came in the form of a double bogey on No. 11 and a bogey on his next hole. He birdied to the 13th hole to get a stroke back, but a bogey on No. 17 undid that progress.

Fans have learned to manage their expectations with the 48-year-old due to his age and the damage his litany of injuries has done physically. He's no longer going to challenge for major titles on a regular basis.

Having him make it through all four rounds isn't a lot to ask, though, and Woods' body seems incapable of letting him do that. Some watching from home are coming around to Colin Montgomerie's point of view that it might be time for Tiger to walk away:

Granted, Woods wasn't the only big name to struggle at Royal Troon. Rickie Fowler is also sitting at eight over, while Rory McIlroy is only one shot better. Cameron Smith, the Open champion in 2022, is at nine over.

But that doesn't change the fact Woods has a lot of work ahead Friday just to ensure he can keep playing through the weekend. He's scheduled to begin his second round at 4:25 a.m. ET with Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.
