Davante Adams' Agents Deny Raiders, Jets Rumors: There's 'Absolutely No Trade Talk'

Joseph ZuckerJul 16, 2024

The agents for Davante Adams refuted the notion the Las Vegas Raiders star could be on the move this offseason.

"This is baseless, unfounded speculation and Davante is expected to be with the Raiders as there has been absolutely no trade talk — period," Kenny Chapman and Frank Bauer said in a statement to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported back in February that New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was recruiting Adams, his former teammate with the Green Bay Packers. WFAN's Boomer Esiason reported Monday on Boomer & Gio a deal might materialize before the 2024 season kicks off.

Dan Orlovsky of ESPN added more fuel to the fire Tuesday on Get Up when he laid out why in his view a move to the Big Apple will happen for the three-time All-Pro:

The trade makes theoretical sense for the Jets and Raiders.

New York can't afford to take any chances in its pursuit of a Super Bowl within the window it has Rodgers on the roster. The team signed Mike Williams to supplement 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson, but he's coming off a 2023 season that ended when he tore his ACL in Week 3.

Las Vegas, meanwhile, is hitting the reset button if not rebuilding outright, so it would be a good time to cash in on Adams' trade value. His individual contributions won't be enough to lift the franchise into contention — the Raiders have missed the playoffs in his first two years.

In addition, recent history hasn't been kind to wide receivers in their 30s, even those in the elite category. There are no guarantees Adams is the kind of asset he is now if Vegas envisions dealing him further down the line.

The statement from his agents was rather unequivocal, though, and time is running out for something to materialize before the season starts. The opening week is less than two months out.

Absent an unexpected development, Jets fans can keep dreaming.
