Spurs' Stephon Castle, No. 4 Draft Pick, Out for NBA Summer League with Wrist Injury

Andrew PetersJul 14, 2024

San Antonio Spurs rookie Stephon Castle will miss the remainder of NBA Summer League after suffering a wrist injury, per the San Antonio Express-News' Tom Orsborn.

Castle suffered a right wrist sprain during the Spurs win over the Portland Trail Blazers. Though it appears to be a minor injury, according to Orsborn, San Antonio feels it's best not to risk it for the No. 4 overall pick.

Though he's only played a handful of games in Summer League, Castle has impressed early on. The UConn product had 12 points in his debut and followed it up with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists against China. On Saturday, Castle had 22 points, five rebounds and four assists.

He's quickly shown why the Spurs used the No. 4 pick on him and San Antonio fans must be excited about seeing him play alongside star Victor Wembanyama.

In his sole year at UConn last season, Castle averaged 11.1 points and helped lead the Huskies to a second consecutive national title. At just 19 years old, he has plenty of time to continue developing and fine-tuning his game.

In his first year with the Spurs, Castle will get to learn from one of the best point guards in NBA history in Chris Paul, who signed with San Antonio in free agency. With a mentor like Paul and a rising star like Wembanyama alongside him, Castle has the chance to make a mark in the NBA in his initial season.

The Spurs had a disappointing 22-60 season last year, but seem poised to make growth in 2024 with one of the best young cores in the league.
