The biggest storyline heading into the season is whether the Celtics will repeat as champions or whether the parity that has defined the league of late will continue.
While there seemed to be no parity at all in the NBA in the late 2010s when the Golden State Warriors went to five straight NBA Finals, won three of them and faced LeBron James' Cleveland Cavaliers in four of them from 2015 through 2019, there has been anything but dynastic runs of late.
In fact, Boston became the sixth different champion in the last six years by defeating the Dallas Mavericks in five games in the 2023 Finals.
It was the culmination of a stretch of near misses for the Celtics after reaching six Eastern Conference Finals in eight years. They came close to lifting the Larry O'Brien Trophy in 2022 just to fall to Stephen Curry and the Warriors in the Finals but finally broke through against Luka Dončić, Kyrie Irving and the Mavericks.
On paper, they appear primed for another deep run with arguably the best potential five-man lineup in the league in Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porziņģis, Jrue Holiday and Derrick White, and they all have experience together at the highest level of the sport after last year's run.
Yet the Eastern Conference could provide more of a challenge this time around after the Philadelphia 76ers added Paul George to a lineup already featuring Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
Throw in a healthy Giannis Antetokounmpo returning to the Milwaukee Bucks and the Madison Square Garden crowds getting ready to support a New York Knicks squad that added Mikal Bridges, and it will be anything but a breeze for Boston in 2024-25.
Anything but a breeze also certainly applies to a loaded Western Conference.
Dallas is the reigning conference champion and has one of the best players in the league in Dončić, but realistic cases can be easily made for the Denver Nuggets, Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves when discussing title contenders.
Throw in the star power of other playoff contenders in the Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans and L.A Clippers, as well the up-and-coming star power in Victor Wembanyama for the San Antonio Spurs, and there is rarely an easy night in the West.
That makes this season appointment viewing from the opening tip, and fans now know when the dates for all the matchups for the highly anticipated campaign will be revealed.
