World No. 1 Jannik Sinner's quest for a second Grand Slam title in 2024 came up short.

Sinner fell in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon on Tuesday, losing to No. 5 Daniil Medvedev 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3.

Per Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic, Sinner "struggled physically in the middle sets" and "looked breathless under the Centre Court roof at various points." Facing a 2-1 deficit in the third set, Sinner was examined by a doctor who checked his heart rate and he left the court, causing an 11-minute delay before play resumed.

After dropping the tiebreaker in the third, Sinner impressively battled back to take the fourth set 6-2. However, Medvedev was able to stave off his rally and close things out in the fifth.

The victory for Medvedev ended a five-match losing streak against Sinner and provided him with some redemption after he lost to the Italian in the 2024 Australian Open final. Those five straight losses to Sinner came after Medvedev won the first six meetings between the two of them.

Sinner was elevated to world No. 1 last month after Novak Djokovic withdrew from the French Open semifinals due to a knee injury. The 22-year-old is the first Italian player, male or female, to ever hold the top spot in the rankings.

Medvedev will face No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals on Friday. Alcaraz defeated Medvedev in last year's semifinal on his way to winning his first Wimbledon title.
