Video: Steph Curry Says 'I Want to Be a Warrior for Life' After Klay Thompson Trade

Julia StumbaughJul 8, 2024

Stephen Curry says he wants to play out the rest of his career with the Golden State Warriors after watching longtime teammate Klay Thompson leave to join the Dallas Mavericks in free agency.

"Nah, I haven't gotten there at all," Curry said when asked by Yahoo Sports' Vincent Goodwill if he could ever see himself in a different uniform.

Curry continued: "I can clearly say I want to be a Warrior for life. That's always been my goal. And I'm saying that sitting in this chair right now, but like you said life, and especially life in the NBA, it is a wild environment, and things change quickly, and the league has changed quickly, so we're trying to adapt and evolve.

"Until then, I'll let everyone know if that changes. But right now, of course, the goal is always to be, to finish my career with one team."

Thompson, who joined the Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million deal, previously expressed a similar sentiment about staying with the Bay Area franchise.

"I would like to be a Warrior for life... I would love to be here for the rest of my career," Thompson told Mark Medina of the Bay Area News Group after the Warriors' third title in four years in 2018.

The Warriors went on to win another championship in 2022 led by the backcourt of Thompson and Curry.

But Thompson's production declined, and his guaranteed spot in the rotation changed, during his 2023-24 contract season before the Warriors let him walk in free agency.

"It's like this thing of, 'Did Steph want that,' or 'Did Steph talk to the organization?' If you know basketball, you know how this works," Curry said about Thompson's departure.

Curry continued: "Winning is hard in this league, and the fact that we've been able to do it for this long has been amazing. Trying to keep a core together this long's been amazing. Obviously, Klay is the first one to not be a Warrior, so it's a different dynamic.

"I always want to win, plain and simple. There's no contentment on just cashing a check and playing basketball and riding it out. Pressure is applied on like, I want to win, and I want to be in the best position to make that happen. Doesn't guarantee anything, but until that changes, and I feel that energy changes, I go about my business the same way."

The Warriors have lost veterans Thompson and Chris Paul in free agency, but added players including Buddy Hield, De'Anthony Melton and Kyle Anderson.

Around Curry, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green, each of whom are signed with the team for at least the next two seasons, the Warriors will now hope to build a competitive enough roster to encourage Curry to re-sign with the franchise before the 2026 expiration of his current contract.
