Hot Takes on Lakers' Dalton Knecht vs. Warriors Amid Bronny James' Knee Injury

zach bacharJul 8, 2024

NBA Summer League action continued on Sunday, as Dalton Knecht and the Los Angeles Lakers fell to the Golden State Warriors by the final score of 92-68 in the California Classic.

Bronny James was unable to suit up for the Lakers, as he was held out of the second game of a back-to-back for precautionary reasons due to swelling in his left knee.

While Knecht struggled with his shooting efficiency, the 23-year-old still showed why he was selected with No. 17 overall pick in the 2024 draft. He dropped 12 points and grabbed two rebounds in 22 minutes of action, shooting just 3-13 from the field although he connected on all five of his free-throw attempts.

He showcased his athleticism, throwing down a two-handed dunk early in the second half.

Knecht also held his own on the defensive end of the court, picking up two steals and making plays in transition.

After shooting 39.7 percent from behind the arc during his senior season at Tennessee, Knecht's long-range efficiency hasn't translated just yet. Through two Summer League contests, he's hit just two of his seven three-point attempts.

Still, it's extremely early to make any assumptions about his future at the professional level. Fans focused on the positives during his performance on Sunday and remained patient with his overall NBA outlook.

The Lakers will attempt to close out their 2024 California Classic appearance on a high note in their final game, a clash with the Miami Heat on Wednesday, before heading to Las Vegas. Tip-off against Miami is at 7 p.m. ET.
