Klay Thompson to Wear No. 31 Jersey with Mavs After Sign-and-Trade from Warriors

Andrew PetersJul 6, 2024

Klay Thompson will have a new team and a new number next season.

The veteran sharpshooter will wear No. 31 next year as he suits up for the Dallas Mavericks, the team revealed on social media Saturday night. It will be the first time in his NBA career that he won't wear No. 11.

Thompson joins some elite company in terms of previous Mavs to rock a No. 31 jersey. Nick Van Exel wore No. 31 during his brief stint with Dallas from 2002-03, as did Jason Terry, who helped the Mavericks win a championship in 2011.

Thompson won't get to wear his signature No. 11 as Kyrie Irving already occupies that jersey, but it's likely a sacrifice Thompson is willing to make in pursuit of a fifth championship.

Thompson joined the Mavericks last week via a sign-and-trade with the Golden State Warriors, who he spent 13 seasons with. The five-time All-Star agreed to a three-year, $50 million deal.

Dallas gets a major roster upgrade in Thompson, who should aid its three-point shooting woes that led to a loss in the NBA Finals in June. It's likely going to be an adjustment for Thompson after spending his entire career with the Warriors, but it could lead him to another championship.
