Marcus Morris Recruited to Mavs by Brother; Markieff Reportedly 'Sure' to Re-Sign

Andrew PetersJul 4, 2024

Markieff Morris' return to the Dallas Mavericks is reportedly expected soon.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported Thursday that the Mavs are "sure" to re-sign the 13th-year veteran.

"The new Western Conference champions are scouring the marketplace for a potential backcourt boost via minimum contract, but sources say they are also sure to re-sign veteran forward Markieff Morris," Stein reported.

Ahead of his return, Morris recruited his twin brother, Marcus Morris Sr., to join him in Dallas:

Below his recruitment tweet, Markieff replied to a fan and said that he plans on returning.

Markieff, a journeyman who has played for eight teams, joined Dallas during the 2022-23 season and signed a one-year deal ahead of the 2023-24 season. He hasn't been a huge contributor, averaging just 2.5 points while playing 8.3 minutes per game last year, but the Mavericks clearly see him as a valuable roster piece as they prepare to re-sign him.

Marcus, who has also played for eight teams, signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers in March after spending the first half of the season with the Philadelphia 76ers. He was a solid contributor, putting up 5.8 points per game off the bench, and even had a 25-point outing against the Boston Celtics in the playoffs.

While adding Marcus to the roster might not be the biggest upgrade Dallas could make this offseason, he would at least have immediate chemistry with Markieff and would give the team some much-needed depth.

Should the Mavs bring in Marcus, it wouldn't be the first time he played alongside his twin brother. The two spent three seasons together playing for the Phoenix Suns from 2012 to 2015. They also played together collegiately at Kansas.

As the 34-year-olds near the end of their careers, teaming up in Dallas could be their last chance to team up.
