NFL Rumors: Brandon Aiyuk, 49ers 'No Closer' to Contract, Trade Request After Meeting

Jack MurrayJul 2, 2024

Contract talks between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk are not progressing.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported that while Aiyuk and the 49ers have had discussions about a potential contract, the two sides are no closer to a deal.

"For Aiyuk and the 49ers, they had conversations recently," Garafolo said, "They are no closer to a deal, from my understanding, but they are also no closer to a trade request. That's never been something that he has explored in this case."

Aiyuk has not been shy about his desire for a lucrative contract hopes, going as far as saying that if the team "can't afford to have a Lamborghini" then it "can't have one" when asked about the 49ers situation with paying multiple skill position players.

It's understandable to see where Aiyuk is coming from. He had 75 catches for 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in 2023 and was named second team All-Pro for his efforts. This production helped San Francisco go 12-5 and reach the Super Bowl.

He is expected to play on a $14.1 million option in 2024 and could hit unrestricted free agency following the season. However, with San Francisco shelling out significant contracts to Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey, while having a big pay day likely incoming for quarterback Brock Purdy, Aiyuk could become a luxury it can't afford with the salary cap.
