Lauri Markkanen Trade Rumors: Jazz Eye Mikal Bridges-Like Package amid Warriors Buzz

The New York Knicks' blockbuster trade for Mikal Bridges may have set up unrealistic expectations for the Utah Jazz as they explore dealing Lauri Markkanen.

Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported the Jazz are only willing to deal Markkanen for a package similar to the one the Brooklyn Nets acquired for Bridges as rumblings surface of the Golden State Warriors' possible interest in a deal. The Knicks sent five future first-round picks (four unprotected) and an unprotected pick swap to Brooklyn in a blockbuster that opened eyes across the league.

On paper, Utah's asking price has some logic. Markkanen and Bridges are the same age (27), and the former has been selected to an All-Star game while the latter has not. Markkanen has also excelled in two years as the Jazz's 1A option, whereas Bridges faltered a bit in the role with the Nets last season.

In reality, there is almost no way a team will give up that type of package for Markkanen.

First of all, there are only a select few teams with the type of draft-pick war chest the Knicks had available. The Houston Rockets have picks and want to microwave their rebuild, but they're likely looking at starrier options. The Oklahoma City Thunder don't really have a need for someone with Markkanen's skill set.

The San Antonio Spurs are by far the best potential trade partner, both on paper and in terms of draft capital. Markkanen is a perfect long-term fit next to Victor Wembanyama in the frontcourt, and San Antonio has the Atlanta Hawks' 2025 and 2027 first-round picks and rights to swap with Atlanta in 2026.

Still, San Antonio isn't going to bid against itself. The Spurs would likely offer one of those future Hawks picks and a future pick or two of their own for Markkanen, but the idea of four or five unprotected selections is highly unlikely.
