Klay Thompson's Dad Mychal Not in 'Congratulatory Mood' After Lakers Snubbed for Mavs

Tyler ConwayJul 2, 2024

There may be one member of Lakers Nation angrier than anyone at Klay Thompson choosing to sign with the Dallas Mavericks in free agency: his own father, Mychal.

The former NBA center told SiriusXM NBA Radio that he was not in a "congratulatory mood" after his son spurned the Lakers for the Mavericks.

Thompson agreed to a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks on Monday. Anthony Irwin of Lakers Daily reported Thompson turned down a four-year, $80 million offer from the Lakers, citing state taxes and the desire to compete for a championship.

The Lakers have struck out on every target they hoped to land this summer. Jonas Valanciunas agreed to a three-year contract with the Washington Wizards, and James Harden returned to the Los Angeles Clippers on a two-year pact. Along with Thompson, those were the three players LeBron James was willing to take a pay cut to play with, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN.

The Lakers could still target DeMar DeRozan in free agency or explore the trade market, but Mychal Thompson's frustration with the lack of progress this offseason is understandable. Landing Klay Thompson would have been a major home run for the Lakers, even as he's clearly shown signs of decline since missing 30 months due to leg injuries.

Mychal Thompson played for the Lakers from 1987 to 1991, winning two championships with the franchise. He has spent much of his post-playing career as a broadcaster for the Lakers organization.
