Celtics' Updated Salary Cap After Jayson Tatum's Historic $315M Rumored Contract

Paul KasabianJul 1, 2024

Boston Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum has reportedly agreed to a five-year, $315 million supermax extension, per Chris Haynes of TNT Sports.

ESPN's Bobby Marks provided a breakdown of the extension, which begins in 2025-26.

He also made this note regarding the 2025-26 season.

Tatum entered this offseason with $34,848,340 owed to him in 2024-25 with a player option for $37,096,620.

He'll still make that $34.8 million in 2024-25, putting the Celtics' payroll at an estimated $208,592,598 for next year right now, per Spotrac.

However, with Tatum's extension kicking in for the 2025-26 campaign, Boston's payroll will balloon to $254,319,477, first in the league, per Spotrac.

The Celtics are coming off one of the best seasons in the team's illustrious history, winning a total of 80 games (including playoffs) en route to the franchise's 18th title. Tatum and co-superstar Jaylen Brown are the biggest reasons for that success, and both are with the team for the long-term on huge contracts. Brown notably signed a five-year, $303.7 million supermax extension last season.

But the Celtics have locked in core as they search for a dynasty in this championship window. ESPN's Field Yates provided a breakdown.

Obviously, the Celtics are paying a big price for success, but it's clearly worth it. They appear to be the league's top team going into next year no questions asked as well.

There's no flexibility down the road for some time, with the Celtics having total cap allocations of $250,135,094 in 2026-27 and $220,896,869 in 2027-28. But the Celtics' time is now as the team looks to become the NBA's next dynasty.
