Austrian F1 Grand Prix 2024 Results: George Russell Wins; Max Verstappen Finishes 5th

George Russell was able to halt Max Verstappen's two-race win streak in a chaotic finish at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Both Verstappen and Lando Norris were battling it out before both were called for violations on the 64th lap, allowing Russell to move into the lead. He was more than two seconds ahead of the pack over the final three laps to earn his second career F1 victory.

Verstappen and Lando Norris were going at it throughout the race. Norris was unhappy at one point when Verstappen, who was coming out of a pit stop, appeared to cut him off as he was going in.

Later in the race, Verstappen was trying to hold off Norris, who briefly took the lead on the 59th lap before a track limits violation cost him the spot.

Verstappen was able to finish fifth, giving him nine top-five finishes in 11 races this season. Norris went from challenging for the lead to finishing last after retiring with seven laps to go when one of his tires popped.

Oscar Piastri, Carlos Sainz Jr. and Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top four behind Russell. Piastri's second-place showing is tied for the best finish of his career.

This is the third consecutive race that has been dominated by the trio of Verstappen, Norris and Russell. Verstappen and Norris finished in the top two spots in the past two races in Spain and Canada.

Russell finished third in Canada and fourth in Spain, with his Mercedes teammate, Lewis Hamilton, taking the third spot. This was the moment Russell has been building toward all season with nine top-eight finishes coming into Sunday.

Even though Verstappen was unable to win his third straight race, in some ways this was another incredible performance for the best driver in the world. He, like Norris, had a tire blow on the 64th lap.

Verstappen was able to get into the pit area to replace the tire. He came out of that mess and still managed to finish fifth.

The three-time reigning F1 champ will look to get back to the top of the mountain next week in England. He won the race last year as part of his streak of 10 consecutive victories.
