NBA Rumors: Giannis, Embiid, Booker Were Knicks' Dream Targets Before Bridges Trade

The New York Knicks were interested in several superstars before trading for Mikal Bridges in a deal with the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Knicks' "dream targets" included Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid, Phoenix Suns shooting guard Devin Booker, and Minnesota Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns.

Stein noted that New York explored "the prospect" of trading for Los Angeles Clippers wing Paul George, and there where even some "whispers" in league circles that the team could pursue Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo "down the road."

Although players such as Booker and Embiid were reportedly at the top of the Knicks' wish list, they didn't appear to be available for a trade. Despite the Suns' disappointing first-round exit in 2024, the All-Star guard didn't request to be moved.

While rumors swirled about his potential desire to join New York, Gerald Bourguet of PHNX Sports reported in April that they were "unequivocally false."

With the 76ers in contact with teams such as the New Orleans Pelicans regarding Brandon Ingram during the offseason, it appears that Philadelphia is focused on adding players alongside Embiid and Tyrese Maxey rather than moving the 2023 MVP.

As for Antetokounmpo, ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported on May 6 that there were "no rumbles" pointing toward the 2021 Finals MVP contemplating his future with the organization.

Even though a superstar trade never materialized, the Knicks still made a large splash by acquiring Bridges. The cost wasn't cheap, as New York gave up four unprotected first-round picks as well as a protected first in 2025 (via ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski). Brooklyn also received forward Bojan Bogdanović and a 2028 pick swap.

Bridges should fit nicely as an ancillary piece next to Jalen Brunson following a breakout season from the All-Star guard. The former Net will also be reuniting with his former college teammates at Villanova such as Brunson, Josh Hart and Donte DiVincenzo.
