Klay Thompson Rumors: Magic 'Only' Willing to Offer 2-Year Contract to Warriors Star

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson may be looking at a few similar offers in free agency.

On the most recent episode of the Ball Don't Lie podcast, Yahoo Sports' Jake Fischer revealed that the Orlando Magic are "only" willing to offer Thompson a two-year contract (55:40 mark).

Fischer added that a potential offer would be "bigger" than the two-year, $22 million contract that Orlando gave veteran Joe Ingles as a free agent during the 2023 offseason. Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of The Athletic revealed on Monday that there is "mutual interest" between the Magic and the five-time All-Star.

That may not be enough to convince Thompson to leave the Warriors, as he's reportedly searching for a new deal that will last at least three years (via Monte Poole of NBC Sports).

The 34-year-old likely won't receive an annual value on a free agency contract close to the $43.2 million that he received during his 2023-24 campaign, the final season of a five-year deal worth $189.9 million that he signed in 2022.

Despite Thompson's desire for a new contract of three or more years, the Warriors also seem to be taking a similar approach as Orlando. In a Thursday appearance on The Hoop Collective, ESPN's Tim MacMahon said that "we've heard it's a two-year offer" when discussing Golden State's negotiations with the veteran (30:25 mark).

After coming off a year in which he shot below 40 percent from behind the arc for just the second time in his career to go along with a scoring average of 17.9 points per game, front offices around the league appear to be hesitant to offer Thompson a long-term contract.
