Mavs Eliminated with Game 5 Loss to Celtics, NBA Fans Blame Kyrie Irving, Luka Dončić

Andrew PetersJun 17, 2024

The Dallas Mavericks' season is over after a 106-88 loss in Game 5 against the Boston Celtics on Monday night.

The Mavericks avoided the sweep on Friday to make it a 3-1 series, but they ultimately didn't have enough to force another game.

Dallas' stars Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving had strong performances in Game 4, but struggled to find their rhythm on Monday. Dončić finished with 28 points, though most of those points came when the game was far out of reach. Irving had 15 points on 5-of-16 from the field.

With Dončić and Irving struggling, the Mavericks didn't get much help from the supporting staff, leading to the somewhat lopsided season-ending loss.

After the Celtics eliminated Dallas on Monday, fans criticized Dončić and Irving for failing to show up in the biggest game of the season.

The Mavs now have a long offseason ahead of them as they go back to the drawing board to figure out what they can do to have a different result next year.

It's clear Dončić is the cornerstone of the franchise, but he had very little help in the postseason, especially in the Finals. Irving can be the perfect sidekick to him at times, but the former NBA champion was nonexistent for most of the Finals.

Dallas has made strides in becoming a contender, but there is obviously still work to do after this year's result.
