Ladd McConkey, Chargers Agree to 4-Year, $10M Rookie Contract with Record Guarantees

The Los Angeles Chargers signed wide receiver Ladd McConkey to a record-breaking rookie contract on Monday.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, McConkey received the most guaranteed money in NFL history for a player selected with the No. 34 overall pick in the draft. The total value of the deal is four years and $10 million (via Spotrac).

McConkey was selected by the Chargers in the second round of the 2024 draft following an impressive three-year college career at Georgia.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers' front office were clearly impressed with the receiver throughout the pre-draft process, as Los Angeles traded up to select him on April 26.

McConkey thrived on the boundaries as well as the slot during his final two years with the Bulldogs, hauling in 88 receptions for 1,240 yards and nine touchdowns in 24 combined games.

He should immediately contribute in his rookie year, as the Chargers' wide receiver room underwent several major changes during the 2024 offseason. Former first-round pick Mike Williams joined the New York Jets in free agency, while six-time Pro Bowl wideout Keenan Allen was traded to the Chicago Bears.

McConkey has continued to impress coaches and teammates alike throughout minicamp, earning praise from Justin Herbert.

"It's like he's been a four- or five-year vet," Herbert said, per Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times. "He understands the game. He understands leverage. He's a smart player, and he's very athletic. I'm really looking forward to getting him the ball."

The budding chemistry between Herbert and McConkey is a promising sign for the Chargers, who are looking to return to the playoffs after a disappointing 2023 campaign that ended with a 5-12 record. Their passing attack also took a step back, ranking No. 13 in 2023 after previously owning the No. 3 spot in 2022.
