MLB Rumors: Marlins Plan to Trade Josh Bell; Realize They 'Have to Eat' $16M Contract

The Miami Marlins are reportedly planning to trade first baseman Josh Bell, but it will cost them most of the $16 million remaining on his contract, per USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

"The Marlins plan to trade first baseman Josh Bell but realize they will have to eat most of his remaining $16 million contract," Nightengale wrote.

Bell, who is in his ninth season in the majors, has recorded a .236 batting average, collecting 62 hits, seven home runners, 31 RBI and 27 runs. If a deal gets done, it would send him to his fifth team in the last two seasons.

After beginning his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Bell has been with the Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres, Cleveland Guardians and Marlins since 2022. Jon Heyman of the New York Post listed the Pirates, Houston Astros and Minnesota Twins as possible teams to make a move for Bell.

One of the worst teams in the National League, the Marlins are sitting at 23-47 on the year and have virtually no chance of reaching the postseason.

Given its current position, Miami has seemingly begun preparing for the future. The Marlins traded Luis Arraez in May before dealing right-handed pitcher Darren McCaughan a few weeks later. Miami got a handful of pieces from the Padres in return for Arraez, and they could likely pick up a few more for Bell.
