Lucas Thompson to East Carolina: How Did South Carolina and Miami Miss Out?

Lucas Thompson, a member of the ESPNU 150 has made his decision, and it was a shocker. Thompson has pledged to a school many that had no chance in getting him.

How did Miami and South Carolina miss out on one of the more underrated prospects in the nation? Where exactly is Thompson headed? Let's take a look and see.

Who Is Lucas Thompson?

Thompson is a 6'1", 190-pound safety prospect out of Florida. He reminds me a bit of Markelle Martin of Oklahoma State, as he can plug the run but flashes solid range.

A 4.5 40-yard dash guy, Thompson could also grow into a stellar outside linebacker should he add some more weight. However, I think a Rover/SS type of role is his first aim.

On the recruiting front, it came down East Carolina, Miami and South Carolina and Thompson has made his choice.

Thompson chose to commit to ECU a few moments ago at the Under Armour All-American game. He took a trip to ECU on Halloween weekend and loved it there.

Thompson told Scout.com that it was a family environment and he built a strong relationship with the coaching staff. Thompson figures to be much needed cavalry to help Ruffin McNeill's struggling defense.

Miami Was in His Top 2

A criticism of Miami I've heard several times this cycle is that the 'Cane coaching staff is not big-game hunting.

Al Golden comes from Temple, and it seems aside from a few notables, he is still recruiting players of the quality that would head to Philly and not Coral Gables.

South Carolina Was Eliminated

The Gamecocks were elimated a few days ago as it seems like this race came down to Miami and ECU. Miami was thought to be the favorite, but credit the ECU staff for their prowess and establishing a relationship that preaches family.

Steve Spurrier will have to keep looking for his stud safety in this year's crop.
