Tom Brady Gives Drake Maye Advice, Responds to Caleb Williams Chasing His Super Bowls

Tyler ConwayJun 16, 2024

Tom Brady is set to make his debut as an NFL analyst for Fox Sports in the fall, and he's already offering advice to Drake Maye and Caleb Williams on how to find success at the pro level.

"I'm very fortunate to be around him, and I like him a lot," Brady told Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports of Maye. "I've heard great things about him. But his opportunity is going to be really what he makes of it, and how he wants to develop it, and how he wants to attack his profession, like we all do. It's not where you're at when you're 22, it's who you're around when you're 22. Who inspires you to be better? Who develops you?"

Maye is the second quarterback the New England Patriots have drafted in the first round since Tom Brady left the franchise in 2020, taking the North Carolina product No. 3 overall in April's draft. He's expected to compete with Jacoby Brissett in training camp to start Week 3 but is currently behind the veteran on the depth chart.

Maye and Brissett were in attendance for Brady's induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame over the weekend, with the former labeling him the "GOAT."

New England seems prepared to be more patient than it was with Mac Jones, who jumped into the starting lineup immediately after being taken in the first round of the 2021 draft. Jones had a solid rookie campaign but was one of the NFL's worst quarterbacks the last two seasons before being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason.

Much like 2021, the Patriots took a quarterback in a first round in a signal-caller-laden draft. Six quarterbacks were taken in the first 12 picks of the 2024 draft, with Caleb Williams going No. 1 to the Chicago Bears.

Williams has set his sights high going into his pro career, saying he wants to break Brady's all-time Super Bowl wins record (seven). Brady said he admires Williams for finding a way to motivate himself.

"I think people should always reach for the stars," Brady said on NFL Network. "Certainly young quarterbacks in the league, they've got a lot of opportunities. But their career is gonna be made by what they choose to do. And the work they put in and the relationships they develop with their teammates and the organizations they can impact.

"They should have high goals. But at the same time it's hard to achieve them. And I really look forward to seeing that process unfold. That's really where the hard part comes, for sure."

The Bears have done everything in their power to build a roster around Williams to have immediate success. He'll have a stellar receiving corps led by veterans DJ Moore and Keenan Allen and first-round pick Rome Odunze and a strong running back room spearheaded by free-agent signing D'Andre Swift. Couple that with an improving defense, and it's possible Williams will have Chicago competing for a playoff berth in his first season.
