Naito hit Moxley with a Destino for the pin and the win.

Sunday marked a rematch from Windy City Riot in April when Moxley defeated Naito to win the IWGP world heavyweight title for the first time in his illustrious career.

Over the next couple of months, Mox had multiple successful title defenses on both AEW and NJPW shows, beating the likes of Powerhouse Hobbs, Ren Narita and Shota Umino.

At NJPW Dominion earlier this month, Moxley retained the title in a lumberjack match against EVIL, and following his impressive win, he invited anyone in New Japan Pro-Wrestling to step up and challenge him.

Naito did precisely that, expressing a desire to become NJPW's world heavyweight champion for a fifth time.

Aside from their title match at Windy City Riot, Moxley and Naito have some history, as Naito was among Moxley's earliest opponents in New Japan after he left WWE in 2019.

Mox and Umino lost a tag team match to Naito and Shingo Takagi, but Moxley got the better of Naito in the 2019 G1 Climax tournament.

Moxley's title win over Naito at Windy City Riot was somewhat surprising given his status as an AEW-contracted wrestler, but it perfectly set the stage for them to have another encounter at their joint Forbidden Door pay-per-view.

It was anyone's guess who would win Sunday since NJPW could have opted to put the title back on one of its own wrestlers, or to keep it on Mox and continue to benefit from his star power.

Ultimately, Naito was the victor, which could be a sign that Moxley won't be pulling double duty as much between AEW and New Japan moving forward.
