Joey Chestnut vs. Takeru Kobayashi Hot Dog Eating Contest Announced for Netflix
The greatest rivalry in the history of competitive eating will be resurrected later this year, when Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi face off in a one-on-one hot dog eating contest that will be streamed live on Netflix on Labor Day (Sept. 2).
According to a release, Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef will mark the first time the two legends face each other in the last 15 years.
After losing to Kobayashi in 2005 and 2006, Chestnut, a 16-time Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest champion and the winner of the event in each of the last eight years, famously dethroned the six-time defending champion in 2007 and never looked back.
When the two met the following year, they tied at the end of the competition and went to a five-dog sudden death eat-off, which Chestnut won. The Kentucky native bested his rival again when they met for the final time in 2009.
"Through all of my years in competitive eating, Kobayashi stands out as my fiercest rival," Chestnut said in the release. "Competing against him pushed me to be so much better. I know that fans have waited a long time for another chapter of our rivalry and I can't wait for our massive showdown live on Netflix! It's time to give the people what they want!"
Kobayashi appeared to announce his retirement from competitive eating last month, saying in the Netflix documentary Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut that it's time for him to "focus on his well-being and repair the damage he's done to his body over the past two decades." However, he couldn't turn down another opportunity to face his rival once again.
"Retiring for me will only happen after I take him down one last time," Kobayashi said. "This rivalry has been brewing for a long time. Competing against Joey live on Netflix means fans all over the world can watch me knock him out."
Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef is Netflix's latest endeavor into live sports.
Tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal played an exhibition match for The Netflix Slam in March, which Alcaraz won. The Netflix Cup is scheduled for Nov. 14 and will pair athletes from Formula 1: Drive to Survive and the golf documentary series Full Swing in a match-play golf tournament at Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas. Also, a boxing event headlined by Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson was postponed from July 20 and will be streamed on Nov. 15.
The announcement of Chestnut's upcoming showdown with Kobayashi is sure to excite fans who were left disappointed by Tuesday's revelation that he would not be competing in this year's Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest due to his deal with Impossible Foods, a plant-based brand that is a rival to Nathan's.
It will be fun to see if Chestnut still holds the advantage all these years later, or if Kobayashi will be able to return to glory and get the better of him this time around.
