NFL Rumors: Brandon Aiyuk, 49ers Haven't 'Intensified' Contract Talks amid Trade Buzz

Paul KasabianJun 8, 2024

Negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk have not yet "intensified" to the point of the two sides being close to getting a deal done.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported the latest on SportsCenter on Saturday.

"So Brandon Aiyuk's the big one, Fowler said. "We know what the wide receiver market is now. It's looking at probably $30 million and above. And Aiyuk's considered a top-10 receiver now at this point by most in the league.

"Both sides have had negotiations, but it hasn't really graduated to something where it's going to get done and it's intensified. So they got the next six weeks over the summer before training camp to try to get it done or he might not show up based on him not showing up to minicamp as a precedent."

Aiyuk is playing out his rookie deal after the 49ers picked up his fifth-year option. The 26-year-old is coming off his best season as a pro after catching 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns.

Aiyuk is well-deserving of a long-term contract. There's also a sense of urgency for him to get something done and avoid the possibility of the 49ers using the franchise tag on him in 2025, delaying that long-term security for another season.

The good news, as Fowler said, is that the two sides still have six weeks to go before training camp even begins. So this could all be water under the bridge by the time the 49ers begin camp in late July. For now, though, Aiyuk and the 49ers don't appear particularly close to getting that contract done.
