Jalen Hurts Says 95% of Eagles' Offense for 2024 Is New After Kellen Moore Hire as OC

The Philadelphia Eagles hired a new offensive coordinator this offseason, and with that comes learning the nuances of a new offense.

To hear quarterback Jalen Hurts tell it, there is a lot of learning under Kellen Moore.

"You get to a point where you feel, I'm going to be comfortable with this, I like this, that time comes when you can rep it, rep it, rep it later on, but right now it's been a lot of new inventory in—the majority of it, probably 95% of it being new—and so it's just been that process, and it's been a fun process because you get to see what works for other people," Hurts said Thursday, per ESPN's Tim McManus.

"I think the goal coming in was to learn Kellen's offense and to master it, and I think that's been a process, and by the end of it, I want it to be mine and have it in my own way."

Changes were necessary for Philadelphia following its collapse to end the 2023 campaign.

After reaching the Super Bowl in the 2022 season and starting the next year 10-1, the Eagles finished with a 1-6 slide that included a 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round of the postseason.

They responded by firing offensive coordinator Brian Johnson and top defensive decision-makers in Sean Desai and Matt Patricia.

Moore will lead the offense, while Vic Fangio will lead the defense.

McManus noted head coach Nick Sirianni previously said the new offense will be something of a hybrid that has schemes from Sirianni's and Moore's previous systems, but Hurts' comments suggest there is still plenty to learn before Philadelphia starts the season on Sept. 6 against the Green Bay Packers.

Philadelphia is familiar with what a Moore offense can do, as he was the offensive coordinator of the rival Dallas Cowboys for four seasons from 2019 through 2022.

Dallas led the league in yards twice in that span and finished in the top 10 in points three times, including when it led the NFL in scoring in 2021. While the team won just one playoff game during Moore's tenure, the offensive consistency still stood out.

Moore was the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers during a disappointing 2023 season, so the Eagles are hoping a return to the NFC East will allow him to rediscover that consistency he showed with the Cowboys.
