Windhorst: JJ Redick to Lakers Not a 'Done Deal' amid LeBron James Links, NBA Rumors

Adam WellsJun 5, 2024

Amid rumblings that JJ Redick has emerged as the frontrunner to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, ESPN's Brian Windhorst reports there is no deal at this point.

Windhorst explained on Wednesday's episode of Get Up that Redick will "probably" be the Lakers' choice and an announcement could come after the NBA Finals, but it is not a "done deal" to his understanding.

Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported on Tuesday the Lakers are "zeroing in" on Redick as the "front-runner" to replace Darvin Ham, but no final decision has been made at this point.

Redick addressed the rumors on Wednesday's episode of GoJo and Golic. He said his "focus" right now is on calling the NBA Finals for ESPN, and he will address Charania's report "once the season is over."

There has been an expectation for a while now that Redick is the Lakers' preferred choice. He reportedly had an extended interview with club officials recently.

Chris Haynes of TNT Sports and B/R said on the May 29 episode of The Dan Patrick Show that Redick has already been doing background work and calling coaches about potentially joining his staff.

Redick and LeBron James have hosted a podcast together since March. Despite their off-court relationship, James' camp has made it clear he is not influencing this process.

Rich Paul, James' agent, recently told Haynes that LeBron "is not involved" in the Lakers' coaching search.

The Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers are the only two teams that currently have a coaching vacancy. The Washington Wizards (Brian Keefe), Phoenix Suns (Mike Budenholzer), Charlotte Hornets (Charles Lee) and Brooklyn Nets (Jordi Fernandez) have already filled their vacancies.

New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego is the only other candidate who is reported to have had multiple interviews with the Lakers at this point. Sam Cassell, Chris Quinn, Micah Nori and David Adelman are among the candidates who interviewed with the club.

Redick is set to call the NBA Finals for ESPN, along with Mike Breen and Doris Burke. If the Lakers don't announce a coaching hire before the end of the series between the Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics, it wouldn't be a surprise if it's because they are waiting on Redick.
