Bears GM Poles: Caleb Williams Is a QB You 'Win Because of' Rather Than 'Win With'
There will be no shortage of pressure on Caleb Williams' shoulders as he attempts to become the franchise quarterback the Chicago Bears have been looking for throughout their franchise history, and it is clear general manager Ryan Poles believes he is up to the task.
Poles explained Chicago's thought process in drafting Williams No. 1 overall during an appearance on Tuesday's episode of The Adam Schefter Podcast and highlighted the importance of selecting quarterbacks teams can win "because of" on the field.
"We all know it's a quarterback-driven league," he said (20:30 mark). "You need a guy who puts you in position to win games. And in scouting, we talk about win because of and win with types of quarterbacks. Those are the ones you need to win championships."
That Poles mentioned "championships" is notable, as it provides an insight into the team's mindset with Williams.
The front office has surrounded the rookie quarterback with elite-level weapons. Not many offenses in the league can match the depth of impact players at the skill positions that the Bears bring with DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, Cole Kmet and D'Andre Swift, among others.
Chicago's defense also played well down the stretch of the 2023 campaign as it went 5-3 in the final eight games.
There is plenty of reason for legitimate optimism when it comes to the Bears, but it will all depend on Williams living up to the elevated expectations that will be in place when he takes the field.
If he does, Chicago will win plenty of games because of its quarterback.
