Packers GM Wants Jordan Love Contract Extension Done Before 2024 NFL Training Camp

Doric SamJun 4, 2024

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love could be cashing in on a major payday soon.

During an appearance on 97.3 The Game, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said there's mutual interest in a contract extension for Love this summer.

"We're in those conversations right now. I think the nice part about this is none of these things are always easy or fast, but both parties want the same thing," Gutekunst said. "We'd like to get this done before training camp for sure."

Love is set to make $11 million during the 2024 season, which is the final year remaining on his current contract and well below the current market value for top-flight quarterbacks. Gutekunst added that slow-moving negotiations are the norm, but he's confident that the two sides will reach an agreement.

"Stability at that position really allows you to have some security with the way we build our team," he said. "We're looking forward to getting that done, but it never goes fast."

Despite his unsettled contract situation, Love reported for the start of Green Bay's offseason program. While he's shown no indications that he would hold out of training camp, ESPN's Rob Demovsky noted that Love gave a vague answer when asked whether he's willing to play the 2024 season on his current contract.

"We'll see," Love said last month. "I don't know yet. We'll see."

This offseason has been quieter than recent years regarding big-money extensions for quarterbacks. Detroit Lions signal-caller Jared Goff is the most notable player to receive a deal, signing a four-year, $212 million extension. In addition to Love, players like Dallas Cowboys star Dak Prescott, Jacksonville Jaguars star Trevor Lawrence and Miami Dolphins star Tua Tagovailoa are believed to be in line for extensions this summer.

It sounds like the Packers are committed to getting a deal done sooner rather than later, so Love could be the one to set the market for the rest of the quarterbacks waiting to receive their deals.
