Chiefs' Isaiah Buggs Turns Himself In, Released on Bond in Animal Cruelty Case

Timothy RappMay 30, 2024

Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs turned himself in to the Tuscaloosa County Jail on Thursday, according to ESPN, after two misdemeanor warrants were filed against him on Wednesday for his alleged mistreatment of two dogs.

He was released on a $600 bond, with a hearing scheduled for June 13.

Police reportedly found a pit bull and a Rottweiler on the back porch of a home being rented out to Buggs, without any access to food and water, after receiving a report regarding the situation.

The dogs reportedly were "malnourished and neglected," per ESPN's report, and both were seized by authorities. The pit bull was euthanized.

Neighbors said Buggs had recently moved out of the property, though his agent, Trey Robinson, said the dogs weren't owned by his client and instead part of a "subversive campaign" to get him to close the hookah lounge he owns in Tuscaloosa.

"Under no circumstance does Mr. Buggs condone the mistreatment of any animal," he added in a statement. "The dogs at issue did not belong to him, and he was unaware they remained at the property in question."

He also noted that Buggs has been arrested on misdemeanor charges at the hookah lounge in question "on two separate occasions in the past two months, but each time no public record was made of these arrests."

And he concluded that the city of Tuscaloosa was using the charges against his client as "leverage" to get him to give up his business license.

The 27-year-old Buggs had stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions in his career before signing to Kansas City's practice squad in January and agreeing to a futures contract in February.

The Chiefs have seen several players make headlines for the wrong reasons this offseason. Rashee Rice is facing eight charges for his role in a multi-vehicle accident, while kicker Harrison Butker made a controversial commencement speech earlier this month that was labeled homophobic and sexist by many.
