King Gunther Is World Title-Ready; Top Takeaways of WWE King and Queen of the Ring
WWE King and Queen of the Ring promised spectacular action from the best in the business, and the talent delivered.
Gunther and Nia Jax overwhelmed Randy Orton and Lyra Valkyria, respectively, to capture the crowns and earn world title matches at SummerSlam.
Cody Rhodes survived every tactic Logan Paul could employ to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Liv Morgan pulled off a shocking upset with the inadvertent assistance of Dominik Mysterio to steal the Women's World Championship from Becky Lynch.
Sami Zayn retained his intercontinental title by pinning Bronson Reed after Otis wiped out Chad Gable at ringside.
It was an action-packed night in the Jeddah Superdome in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The following are the major takeaways from a memorable night.
Liv Morgan Has Much to Prove in 2nd Women's Championship Reign
1 of 6Liv Morgan has finally won the big one. While this is the second time she has held one of the top women's titles, this time she comes off as a champion and not an underdog.
In her "revenge tour," she clearly established that it was not her who needed the championship but that the championship that needed her.
Morgan has fully established herself as a devious heel with plenty of exciting face challengers ready to take her on.
However, while the buildup has worked, it is always easier to chase the title than carry it. She needs to prove with multiple opponents that she is a main event-level talent.
If she stumbles in the coming weeks before Rhea Ripley comes back, The Eradicator will take back her gold and Morgan may never regain it.
Chad Gable vs. Otis Will Be One of WWE's Hottest Summer Stories
2 of 6While Sami Zayn vs. Chad Gable vs. Bronson Reed had great action, the center of the Triple Threat match was the involvement of Otis at ringside.
The climax of the contest saw Otis lay out Reed but struggle to do the same to Zayn. When push came to shove, he accidentally laid out Gable, taking him out of the finish of the contest.
The crowd was in on an angle that felt almost as personal as The Bloodline stories of recent years.
Gable and Otis have been teaming together since 2020. With a breakup coming, it feels like all that history is coming to a head in an angle that could elevate both men.
Neither has really had a chance to be a serious singles star. Gable is already standing out as a cocky heel, but Otis can finally show out as the big man who will finally realize his potential.
This is an angle that feels special and will make Raw must-watch TV in the coming months.
Sami Zayn Should Win His 1st World Championship in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
3 of 6Sami Zayn was the most popular man in Jeddah throughout this match. The crowd was rocking for the man whose Syrian parents were immigrants to Canada.
While his hometown is Montreal, he gets just as big a reaction in Jeddah each time he performs there.
WWE should use that popularity more. Zayn has long stated his final goal in WWE is to become world champion.
While he holds the intercontinental title proudly, that goal looms large on his future. He is 39 years old, and the WWE roster is only getting younger.
In the next year, Zayn should contend for the world championship and win it. It would be even better for it to happen in Jeddah with what could be the biggest pop of his career.
Nia Jax is Best Super Heavyweight in the Women's Division
4 of 6No one is better in the women's division than Nia Jax when it comes to bringing sheer power in the ring.
The WWE women's division has never seen a more confident super heavyweight. At 6'0", she towered over Lyra Valkyria.
She made The Valkyrie look great in her systematic attempts to bring down Jax to her level, but nothing was ever going to be enough. The Irresistible Force kept a comfortable power throughout.
This match worked in the way the best Vader or Big Show matches worked. The psychology was sound, the action was tight, and the crowd was invested in watching the smaller competitor do everything in her power to fight through.
Jax made that happen without ever having to slow the action. She earned the Queen of the Ring crown and a SummerSlam women's title match through her steady work.
If Bayley is still WWE women's champion at SummerSlam, Jax would be the perfect woman to take the gold off her, establishing herself as the dominant force of SmackDown all the way to WrestleMania 41.
Gunther Must Capture World Championship at SummerSlam
5 of 6From the moment WWE announced the return of King of the Ring, Gunther was the favorite to win the crown. That played out in a great battle with Randy Orton (bar an ugly finish).
The Ring General found a dangerous opponent in The Viper, The veteran pushed Gunther to his limit in the best match of the night but fell short of stopping his incredible momentum.
With this win, Gunther will get a World Heavyweight Championship match at SummerSlam, and there is no reason why he should not win.
Damian Priest currently holds the gold but could lose it in the coming months to Drew McIntyre at Clash at the Castle on June 15. Still, no matter who holds the belt, no one is more right for the world title than The Ring General.
Add in a premium live event in Germany on August 31, and WWE would be ridiculous not to crown him soon.
When Gunther dropped the Intercontinental Championship, it was an inevitability, but predictability should not stop WWE from crowning its best wrestler.
Logan Paul Shows Why WWE Will Eventually Crown Him World Champion
6 of 6Logan Paul was one of the most impressive rookie wrestlers in WWE's history, but it is past time to consider him a serious competitor.
He brought his best to a fight with Cody Rhodes, his best in-ring work since at least his match with Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 39.
He has previously delivered great contests against Roman Reigns and The Miz, but he was still working heavily scripted matches. It took longer for him to show he could work more spontaneous contests as he did against Rhodes.
The story of the match built on how low The Maverick was willing to go to become undisputed WWE champion.
Rhodes may have overcome the best tactics of Paul, but The Maverick stepped up to match The American Nightmare in the ring.
WWE will crown Paul as a world champion in the future, and many will look back on this match as the moment he proved he was ready for the big time.
