Indy 500 Lineup 2024: Full List of Drivers and Qualifying Times for Marquee Race
The 2024 Indianapolis 500 starts with three cars from the same team on the front row.
Scott McLauglin won the pole for Sunday's race. He will be joined by Team Penske teammates Will Power and Josef Newgarden in the first three starting positions.
Power and Newgarden won the Indy 500 for Penske during its run over the last six years in which it won three times at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Starting at the front does not guarantee success in the race itself. Only one driver who started in the top three last year finished in the top five.
The Penske trio must hold off a field that includes six other Indy 500 champions and NASCAR champion Kyle Larson, who qualified in fifth for his first start in Indy Car.
The full starting grid and list of qualifying times can be found here on the Indy 500 website.
Race Preview
Penske had three of the four cars that got over an average speed of 233 miles per hour in Indy 500 qualifying.
All that means is that Penske has a fast set of cars on its hands, but now it needs to navigate the 500-mile, 200-lap race with superb racing and strategy.
A year ago, Newgarden only led five laps on his way to Victory Lane. No driver led more than 40 laps.
In 2022, Marcus Ericsson was in front for just 13 laps in his victory. Scott Dixon led for 95 of the 200 laps.
Power and Newgarden hold the edge over McLaughlin in experience because they have won the Indy 500 before.
McLaughlin finished in 29th, 20th and 14th in his three Indy 500 starts. He comes into Sunday with some mixed results on the IndyCar Series circuit this season. He has three top-10 finishes and two placings outside the top 25.
Alexander Rossi, Takuma Sato, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Helio Castroneves, Dixon and Ericsson are the other six previous champions in the field along with Power and Newgarden.
Dixon is third in the IndyCar Series standings and is the only member of that octet with a win on the circuit in five races so far this season.
Rossi and Dixon's higher-profile teammates could be the stars of the race. Alex Palou and Pato O'Ward have three wins this season between them and Palou leads the IndyCar Series standings.
Palou produced three straight top-10 finishes at Indy for Chip Ganassi Racing, while O'Ward did the same thing for Arrow McLaren Racing from 2020-23.
Larson is the wild-card in the pack on Sunday. The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion qualified fifth for the first leg of his attempted double. He will run the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte on Sunday night.
Larson is one of the most talented drivers in the world, and as we saw in qualifying, his talent shined through in an IndyCar machine. If he has strong race pace, Larson will contend with the IndyCar regulars for the race victory.
