Cowboys' Trey Lance Talks Increased Confidence amid QB2 Battle Behind Dak Prescott

Andrew PetersMay 23, 2024

As Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance battles to be the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Dak Prescott, the former No. 3 overall pick said his confidence has increased in his current role, per DallasCowboys.com's Nick Harris.

"[My confidence] is much higher than it was when I got into the NFL, for sure," Lance said. "I kind of didn't know what to expect. I think that's probably most rookies, if not all of them at one point or another throughout that first year. I feel great about where I'm at. Continuing to get better, continuing to learn and continuing to be a better quarterback."

The Cowboys picked up Lance in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the 2023 season. He didn't see any playing time in his first year with the team as Cooper Rush backed up Prescott, but Lance is looking to be Dallas' second option this year.

Lance showed plenty of potential coming into the NFL out of North Dakota State, but injuries quickly derailed the start of his career. He suffered a finger injury ahead of his rookie season in 2021, limiting him from getting much experience before the season. He played just two games that year while backing up Jimmy Garoppolo.

The 49ers handed Lance the reigns to be the starter in 2022, but a broken ankle in Week 2 sidelined him for the rest of the year and Brock Purdy excelled in his absence to secure the QB1 role moving forward.

Across eight games, Lance has recorded 797 passing yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. He's also picked up 235 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Lance doesn't expect to take Prescott's starting role this year, but he could emerge as the Cowboys' QB2 with a big offseason.
