Finch Blasts Anthony Edwards' Wolves for 'No Composure' in Loss to Luka Dončić, Mavs

Adam WellsMay 23, 2024

Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch called out his team for their sloppy play in the fourth quarter of a 108-105 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Finch said his team had "no composure" down the stretch.

"We haven't really closed quarters very well, closed halves very well over the last handful of games," Finch explained. "It cost us a game in the Denver series. It certainly had an impact on this game tonight, too. We've got to be better in clutch moments."

Minnesota was outscored 26-22 in the fourth quarter, including a 10-3 margin over the final 3:37. That offset a 13-1 run they went on midway through the period that was capped off by Anthony Edwards' three to put the Timberwolves up 102-98.

The T-Wolves committed five turnovers and five fouls in the final 12 minutes. They had turnovers on three consecutive possessions starting with 2:02 remaining. The first one was a bad pass from Jaden McDaniels that was stolen by Luka Dončić.

The second turnover was on a controversial basket interference call. Karl-Anthony Towns appeared to get a put-back dunk off a Mike Conley missed three, but the officials ruled the ball was still in the imaginary cylinder area above the rim to qualify as goaltending.

The play would have tied the score at 104, but instead the Mavs were able to keep a two point lead with 1:41 left to play. Conley's bad pass on Minnesota's next possession was stolen by Dončić for the team's third straight turnover.

Dallas turned those three turnovers into five points. The Timberwolves didn't score after Edwards' three at the 3:37 mark until Naz Reid's layup with 10 seconds left to play.

Minnesota was held to just 43 points in the second half after putting up 62 in the first two quarters. Rudy Gobert (4-of-7) was the only Timberwolves player who shot better than 33.3 percent in the second half. Edwards and Towns combined to shoot 4-of-11 in the fourth quarter.

This isn't uncharted territory for the T-Wolves. They were on the brink of elimination in the second round after losing three straight to the Denver Nuggets before winning Games 6 and 7 to advance.

It's not ideal to keep being in a position where their backs are against the wall, but maybe this Timberwolves team is one that thrives under that type of pressure.

We will find out when the Mavericks and Timberwolves play Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals at the Target Center on Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
