Justin Fields: Steelers Were Top Trade Landing Spot Before, After Russell Wilson Deal

Justin Fields ended up where he wanted.

The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback revealed Tuesday that he told the Chicago Bears through his agent he preferred to be traded to the AFC North team if he was going to be moved, per Mike DeFabo of The Athletic.

He said he felt that way before and even after the Steelers acquired Russell Wilson.

It's not particularly surprising that he saw Pittsburgh as an ideal destination, as the team has not finished with a losing record since the 2003 campaign. That is quite the difference from the Bears, who have finished with a winning record just six times in that same time frame.

While Wilson is the presumed starter at this point, Fields told reporters Tuesday he is "definitely competing. … Russ knows that. We're competing against each other every day.

"I definitely don't have the mindset of me just sitting all year."

Fields is most dangerous with his legs, but he demonstrated growth as a passer last season while leading the Bears to a 5-3 closing stretch in their final eight games. Chicago had the rare opportunity of being a potential contender during the upcoming campaign and still having the No. 1 overall pick in the draft because of a trade with the Carolina Panthers, so it took advantage by selecting Caleb Williams.

That No. 1 pick meant the writing was largely on the wall for Fields in Chicago even though he likely would have been back under normal circumstances, but the Bears at least seemed to send him to a desired destination.

And now he will be battling with Wilson for the starting job.
