Former Pac-12 Coach: Deion Sanders Will Try to Get Shedeur to Win Heisman Trophy

Paul KasabianMay 16, 2024

A former Pac-12 head coach believes that Colorado football head coach Deion Sanders will push his son, Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders, to win this year's Heisman Trophy.

"He's an NFL guy," the coach told Bruce Feldman of The Athletic regarding the Colorado signal-caller.

"Is he the first pick of the draft? I don't know, but I think he's a real dude. I think he throws it well. He's accurate. I think he's a first-round draft pick. I think Deion's going to try to win Shedeur the Heisman. I think they'll be good. They have good wideouts. Their O-line will be better. I think they'll be way better and they'll have a good year."

The latest DraftKings Sportsbook odds have Sanders with 35-1 odds to win the Heisman. Georgia quarterback Carson Beck is atop the Heisman ledger at 8-1, with Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers (9-1) and Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel (10-1) close behind.

Sanders completed 69.3 percent of his passes for 3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns and just three interceptions last year. He also rushed for four more scores.

The Buffaloes will have to fare far better for Sanders to be in the Heisman conversation. Colorado started 3-0 last year before going 1-8 in Pac-12 play to finish 4-8 overall.

The Buffaloes have now moved onto the Big 12, which doesn't appear daunting on paper (247Sports' last ranking lists the Kansas State Wildcats as the conference's top team nationally at No. 17).

Sanders was sensational at times last year and could very well be in line for a great 2024 season. If the Buffaloes post a winning campaign and Sanders continues his ascent then he could easily find himself in New York next December.
