This just in: Zach Edey is still tall.

The Purdue center was the largest player in nearly every category at the 2024 NBA draft combine, while also somewhat quelling the notion his athleticism is a weakness.

Edey certainly doesn't have elite top-end speed—his sprint time was among the worst of any combine participant—but his lateral quickness in the lane agility drill was significantly better than expected. He performed better than UConn center Donovan Clingan in essentially every athletic metric.

Clingan is widely expected to be a top-five pick, while Edey's draft stock is perhaps the most polarizing of any player in this class.

Jonathan Givony of ESPN reported there are "plenty of executives" who view Edey as a lottery pick. B/R's Jonathan Wasserman, meanwhile, ranks the reigning National Player of the Year as his No. 31 overall prospect.

Edey was dominant over his final two collegiate seasons and led Purdue to the 2024 national championship game, but his slow feet on defense and inability to stretch the floor are glaring negatives. It's fair to question whether will be able to cover ground defensively well enough against NBA talent and spacing, particularly after we saw him struggle with those aspects at times in college.

That said, you can't teach size and Edey has it in abundance. Given his solid numbers at the combine, odds are his stock will rise in what's considered a weak draft class.
